Down and dirty first impressions review on the Perla del Mar (Pearl of the Sea) by J.C. Newman Cigars this week. I am smoking the M size (4.75×52) which our local sales rep, Dan, gifted me two of. All of the Perla del Mar cigars are box pressed.
Pre-Light
Wrapper of the Perla del Mar gives off a slight barnyard scent with more hay than anything while the cold draw gives me a nice caramel flavor. Construction was a bit off on this sample with the one cap coming off completely after I lit it up. First one I smoked did not have this issue.
Cigar
Starting off this Perla del Mar with a nice creamy caramel taste and some woodiness in the background. Getting a bit of spice on the retrohale but still a mild cigar.
Very nice smoke at the halfway point with the caramel and woody taste ever present with the spice mainly on the retrohale that includes a taste I have not been able to put my finger on from the first one I smoked through this one. It is pleasant but my brain is not distinguishing it by giving it a name. Still a mild smoke and very enjoyable to this point.
Last half of the Perla del Mar came through with more spice hitting the tongue with the caramel taking the front and pushing the wood taste to the rear. Smoke volume has been great and pretty creamy. Stayed pretty mild throughout and would probably go real nice with a morning coffee.
Wrap-Up
Would I buy it again? Yes. I really enjoyed the two I had and the price point seems great. I will definitely try other sizes to find my favorite (like that’s a chore).

I recently smoked one of the Perla Del Mar Ms also. The first half was like sucking air, absolutely nothing. At the halfway point, it kicked in and flavors started. Very nice last half. Don’t know why I got nothing at first.

I will open this up by admitting I am new to cigars – I’ve
been smoking them basically since last December. That said, PDMs
are by *far* my favorite so far, particularly given the price
point. My palatte isn’t refined at all, but I love that this one
doesn’t have much, if any, pepper/ spice to it – that tends to hurt
my nose. As the review said, nice, creamy smoke to it. Even draw,
just a great all around cigar for me. Of all the various cigars
I’ve tried so far, this is the one I recommend to friends.
This looks a lot like the San Miguel from A.J Fernandez
before Gurkha pulled some copy right crap. The look of the wrapper,
the filler even the label is very similar.
This is definitely a must try cigar if you like Dunhill this is the Dunhill killer
