We talked to a different personality in each section of the Drew Estate booth we visited at IPCPR 2017. Holding court in Undercrown territory was our old friend Pedro Gomez. After some friendly chatter, Pedro brings our attention to the new Undercrown Sun Grown. This extension to the Undercrown brand features an Ecuadorian Sun Grown Sumatra seed wrapper, a stalk-cut Sun Grown Habano (like the T52’s wrapper) as binder and Nicaraguan fillers, including a single extensively aged ligero leaf from the Nueva Segovia region bordering Honduras, near Jalapa. The Undercrown Sun Grown was a combined effort on the part of Willy Herrera and the Undercrown Blending Team at the factory, and will be available in seven sizes. If you’re trying to decide which vitola to try first, Pedro says the Gran Toro is Willy Herrera’s favorite, so I’d recommend starting there. The Undercrown sun Grown is shipping in August, but expect the tins in November.
