Smoke and Steel: Episode 004 – When Is Too Many Cigars Actually Too Many?

Hey cigar lovers! Walt here with another episode recap from the Smoke and Steel cigar podcast. Episode 4 was one of those sessions that perfectly captures why I love doing this show – great cigars, better friends, and conversations that somehow manage to be both hilarious and thought-provoking at the same time.

The Great “How Many Cigars in One Day” Debate

This episode kicked off with me sharing what might be my most ambitious smoking day ever. Picture this: I had a rough week dealing with car troubles (more on that disaster later), and Sunday rolled around with a mountain of work waiting for me. So naturally, I decided to make it a proper cigar day.

Starting at 6 AM with an Oliva Connecticut, I worked my way through a Murcielago, a New World Cameroon, New World Oscuro, and finished with a La Gloria Cubana from that domino set I picked up. By the time I lit up that Gloria Cubana, something interesting happened – it just wasn’t fun anymore. My palate was shot, everything tasted like leather, and I realized I’d hit my limit.

This sparked a fascinating discussion among the guys about smoking limits. Eric, our resident golf trip veteran, shared his strategy for those Ocean City trips where we’re literally smoking from morning to night. His advice? Start light in the morning, stay light through golf, and save the heavy cigars for evening when your palate’s is worn out and need the extra power to taste.

The consensus seemed to be that four cigars is about the max for most of us, though some of the guys on our trips have pushed eight or nine. Personally, I think I learned my lesson – quality over quantity, every time.

If You Could Only Smoke Three Brands Forever…

Now here’s a question that really got everyone thinking: if you could only smoke three cigar brands for the rest of your life, what would they be?

The discussion was fascinating because it really made us think about what we value in cigars. Do you go for consistency? Variety within a brand? Price point? Availability?

Padron was the unanimous choice – and honestly, how could it not be? I’ve never had a bad Padron, period. From the 2000 series (which used to be four bucks, can you believe that?) to their anniversary releases, they’re just consistently excellent. Well-constructed, never go out, you can set one down for five minutes and pick it right back up. They’re the Toyota of cigars – reliable, well-built, and they just work.

AJ Fernandez got multiple votes, and I can see why. That guy’s catalog is incredibly diverse – you’ve got everything from mild Connecticut wrappers to full-bodied powerhouses. It’s almost like choosing an entire cigar ecosystem rather than just one brand.

Foundation came up too, which makes sense. Nick Melillo has been putting out some really solid sticks. I used to smoke Charter Oaks regularly until I burned myself out on them – classic case of loving something so much you overdo it.

The Changing Landscape of Cigar Shops

We got into an interesting discussion about the cigar shop scene, triggered by news that a place we visited from time to time – what used to be Cigars Cigars (Colmar) – had changed hands and was now called Cigar Phoenix.

The reality is, it’s a tough business. Between taxes, regulations, and changing consumer habits, a lot of shop owners are getting out while they can. We’ve noticed more and more of these hybrid places popping up – vape shops with a small humidor in the corner, lounges that focus more on whiskey memberships than cigars, or these little retail outlets that also sell lottery tickets and pipe tobacco.

Don’t get me wrong, some of these places can surprise you. Our buddy Eddie just scored a five-pack of rare cigars from a random vape shop in Delaware for fifty-one bucks – probably an eighty to hundred-dollar value. Sometimes you find the real treasures in the most unexpected places.

But there’s something to be said for a proper cigar lounge with knowledgeable staff, a good selection, and a comfortable place to sit and enjoy your smoke. Those are getting harder to find, at least around here. Maybe it’s just the market we’re in – we’re not Tampa where there’s a premium cigar shop every three blocks.

The Lighter Incident That Still Haunts Us

Eric brought up the infamous lighter incident from a golf trip and we all had a laugh. Picture this: windy day on the golf course, he goes to light a cigar with this torch lighter, and next thing you know, his golf glove is completely on fire. When he tried to rip it off, the melted fingers stayed stuck to his hand. He spent the rest of the round – about eight holes – pinching his hand to cut off circulation because the pain was so bad.

Technology Struggles and Podcast Growing Pains

Rob rolled in fashionably late (as usual) and proceeded to struggle with his phone’s flashlight for about ten minutes while we recorded. It’s always something with technology and this crew. But that’s part of the charm – we’re just regular guys talking about cigars, not some polished production.

We’re still figuring out the rhythm for the podcast, trying to build up a backlog so we can maintain a predictable schedule. The goal is to keep these conversations flowing naturally while giving our listeners something valuable every week.
