Congratulations are in order

Last month we ran a contest for a Colibri Reload Lighter. I would like to formally congratulate Jimscar as the winner of the Colibri Reload Lighter courtesy of Lighters Direct. The winner of the brown bag sampler is emjaysmash for the excellent job he did on referring people to the contest.

I just selected the first winner for this months contest, who receives a box of Colombian Gold Robustos courtesy of Bravo Cigars, which is Brad in Buffalo.

I would like to thank everyone for participating in the recent comments.
Good luck on all of our future contests.

  1. Hello, I’m a frequent visitor to to the site and was interested in entering a few of the current contests. I was curious if it was necessary to be a registered user to participate in these contests?

  2. First off, thanks to Walt, StogieReview, and LightersDirect. Especially in these tough economic times, having people, websites, and e-tailers supporting and growing the herf community is a testament to the fellowship of the leaf.

I’m VERY impressed with the Colibri Reload lighter and with LightersDirect. My prize showed up in full retail packaging and well encased in shipping packaging. When I first saw the Reload and the cartridge system, I figured it would be an expensive proposition. Not so. First off, Colibri packs 2 cartridges in the retail pack. Second, Lighters Direct threw in a 3 pack of cartridges, which was totally unexpected. Finally, each cartridge lasts at least as long as a normal lighter fill. Given how much butane I lose constantly bleeding ligthers before a refill, I’d say the Reload system is not much more expensive than traditional systems. Add in the safety and convenience factors and this is a winner.

The lighter itself is a winner as well. Two tone with medium silver and gunmetal, the open/strike mechanism is smooth and solid. The single torch flame is wide and lights the largest ring gauges with ease, while the adjustment screw is easy to turn with my very short thumbnail. The cartridge itself is a very transparent plastic and can be seen through the open front of the lighter, making it easy to tell if one should take a spare cartridge when traveling out of the house. Swapping a cartridge requires no tools and takes less than 10 seconds.

I hope Colibri will accept the cartridges back for reuse. I don’t want a refill or deposit program (which worked out SO well for bottles and cans… ahem…). It would just be nice to know that all those cartridges will not end up in landfills. I wouldn’t mind packing a couple dozen up and spending 3 bucks to send them back for eventual reuse.

In closing, I would just like to remind everyone that the SCHIP tax is rearing its ugly head again. Several prominent lawmakers have stated that ramming this flawed legislation through will be their first order of business in January, when there is no longer anyone in the White House that will veto it. We must band together again and let our elected officials hear our collective voice, twice as loud as before. The effects in the US will be small, a few thousand people will lose their jobs, several hundred small businesses will be force to close. And SHAME! SHAME on these lawmakers for hiding behind children to achieve their personal objectives. If it passes, they will pat themselves on the back for saving lives and untold millions of dollars in health care costs – all without a shred of factual evidence. In Cuba, where it is reported that a high percentage of the population smokes long-filler cigars, many smoking constantly, there is no epidemic of cancer, asthma, emphysema, or any other ailment that has been linked to tobacco. “Truth” my a**.

In Central America, South America, Mexico, Indonesia and Africa, however, 50,000 to 100,000 people will lose their jobs. Many of them are the primary or sole wage-earners for their households. This will bring economic devastation to struggling countries and give cause to 250,000 to 500,000 people to hate the US. With the security and economic concerns we are already facing, this will threaten our way of life in less than a year or two. And for any self proclaimed “world leader”, it is irresponsible and callously self-serving. Scisco Emptor

  3. Alex,
I am almost positive I sent you an email about this, but just incase I did not, you do not have to be a registered member. All that is required is that you leave a valid email address when commenting so that you can be contacted if you are chosen as a winner.
